Dell Power Manager

A Dell Systems Engineer on the team that supports LHB's account stopped by our office yesterday and shared a few interesting things with us... it wasn't even a sales pitch as we already had access to everything he covered. In today's post I thought I would share the Dell Power Manager installed on Dell systems. It has a couple features I thought were pretty cool.

The first screen, shown above, shows the health and charge status of the battery. Clicking the Settings button opens a screen where you can select from a couple different options related to the lifespan and power consumption, during charging, of the battery. The recommend option is Adaptive as shown here...

But, if you are between flights at an airport and need a quick charge, switch to ExpressCharge™ to recharge as fast as possible. This option is not as good for the lifespan of the battery so it should probably be used sparingly.

If you sit at your desk, with the laptop plugged in 98% of the time (which is a surprisingly large number of people in my experience) then use the Primarily AC Use to stop the endless trickle charge that is just wasting power and reducing the life of your battery.

Another option is Custom, which allows you to manually set an upper and lower limit for charging.

Another section deals with Thermal Performance... if you need the laptop to quite running like a 'jet engine' so you can record a video with audio, then select Quiet; note the possible side effect is a hot computer that might run slower.

On a somewhat related note, LHB participated in a plug load study you can read about in this paper (PDF): Advancing the Last Frontier – Reduction of Commercial Plug Loads

Un-Related: Dell VR Video

Speaking of Dell, have you seen the marketing video they made on how I implemented VR at LHB using Dell hardware? :)

Fun stuff!
