Free Online AIA San Antonio Event - Introduction to Zero Carbon

My colleague Kate Sector, LFA, LEED Green Associate, Design Performance Coordinator at Lake | Flato, will be presenting Introduction to Zero Carbon: Achieving Operational & Embodied Balance next week. She is also the regional LFA Ambassador

The event is free and attendees receive AIA and LFA continuing education credit..

We have been doing many exciting things in this area at Lake | Flato. From research, to implementation... employing strategies such as carbon sequestering mass timber in place of steel or concrete structural systems. Using a Revit add-in called Tally, we preform life cycle analysis (LCA) on proposed construction materials and compare global warming potential (GWP) on various options.

Here are some details Kate provided about the session:

As climate disasters threaten the wellbeing of people and the planet, the need to reduce CO2 emissions is ever more urgent. Zero Carbon buildings reverse the effects of climate change and support the wellbeing of local economies while meeting the needs of owners and occupants.

In this 1-hour Zero Carbon course, you’ll be introduced to carbon in the built environment, the benefits of Zero Carbon buildings, and building energy and material use climate impacts. You’ll discover key planning and design considerations for reducing the embodied and operational carbon impacts of your projects that’ll support the project’s climate action goals. Examples of real life projects that have achieved Zero Carbon certification will give you the guidance and confidence needed to commit to a Zero Carbon future.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  1. Define the building industry’s contributions to global carbon emissions
  2. Describe how Zero Carbon certified buildings demonstrate value and impact
  3. Name key design and planning needs for Zero Carbon buildings
  4. Outline the process for developing a Zero Carbon approach”
