Flake Lato - The Magic of Lake Flato

Hospitality unmatched.
    Breathtaking natural beauty.
        Camaraderie beyond measure.

These sentiments barely do Lake Flato's annual outing justice... this is the topic of today's post!

Last weekend I participated in Flake Lato (yes, this is spelled correctly;)).

Annually, the entire firm gathers at Ted Flato's ranch, which is a couple hours west of San Antonio, Texas. Maybe 60 miles from the Mexican border (yes, Mexico is to our west). This also includes significant-others and children, which reached 150 adults.

People with younger children stay in one of three buildings on the property and everyone else camps in tents scattered around the area.

I am still in awe of how amazing the overall experience was. From swimming and kayaking in the clearest spring-fed river to rugged Jeep rides, to amazing food. I wanted to share some pictures of the weekend, as they do so much more justice than any words possibly could.

Friday

Everyone worked until noon Friday, and then made their way to the ranch. After getting settled and eating dinner everyone sat around talking or went swimming/kayaking. A small group of us kayaked up the river around midnight and just stared at the most vibrant stars in the sky!

Dramatic entry to the property... driving through some water.

A special place for the 'most newly' newlyweds...

Outdoor showers, like the one on this porch, were used by the campers.

My tent...

Friday dinner under the 'dance hall' structure...

Saturday

We had a full day to play on Saturday... nothing about this entire event had anything to do with work!

The photo below is at the dam, where the water trickles over the top and people are always gathered. The tent structure provides nice shade and is a good spot to jump in the water and cool off.

Ted has two Jeeps which small groups can use to head down river and explore a few amazing swimming spots. The drive there was a highlight of the experience. Some rugged terrain most vehicles could not have negotiated. Plus, a lot of people singing to music and having a good time.

One swimming spot stop... we all jump in the water and don't even dry off as we head to the next spot.-

Saturday dinner was an amazing catered mexican meal. Oh my gosh, it was so good! You can tell from the photos.

The dance hall, as a dance hall... this was the only photo I got.

Sunday

Sunday was mostly eating breakfast and heading home. A few managed to get in a swim or do some kayaking before leaving.

I did a little hiking down the river, and found this neat foot bridge.

During breakfast I sat in on part of this conversation, where Ted was talking about the family history on the property.

So Special

I have worked at several firms and they all have fun events. But I have never been to anything this special. The hospitality was amazing and everyone in the firm is so friendly and talented.

If you want to get in on the fun, you should some work with us:) https://www.lakeflato.com/contact/careers
