IES Mexico - Lighting Innovation Symposium 2023

Later this month, I have the opportunity to attend and present in person at an Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) event on lighting design in Monterrey, Mexico. The local IES chapter is hosting a symposium, and I will be presenting alongside a great lineup of professionals in the lighting design industry.

As the chair of a national IES committee (in the US), trainer of professional lighting designers, and author of several BIM-based textbooks, I look forward to sharing my knowledge with the audience. I presented to this group, remotely, two years ago, which I wrote about here: IES Mexico Presentation - Open to All.

Symposium Description

The IES Symposium arrives in Monterrey, bringing together local and international lighting experts. It is an opportunity for colleagues to meet, make new connections and learn from each other. The event features multiple lectures on exciting new ideas in lighting. The symposium continues with a product showcase courtesy of our sponsors where attendees can explore a variety of cutting-edge lighting products. To end the day, everyone is invited to a cocktail hour where attendees can chat. This symposium marks the IES's dedication to sharing knowledge and pushing the boundaries of lighting. Get ready for a day filled with learning, networking, and a shared passion for the magic of light.

My Session:
BIM in Professional Lighting Design

My presentation will cover the following topics:
  • What is BIM?
  • The benefits of BIM for lighting designers
  • Tools and workflows for lighting designers using BIM
  • Case studies of BIM-enabled lighting designs
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a rapidly growing technology transforming the construction industry. BIM offers several benefits for lighting designers, including:
  • A single source of truth for the proposed design: BIM can coordinate the work of different disciplines, ensuring that everyone is working from the same information. This can help to avoid costly errors and delays.
  • BIM add-in software for lighting designers: Several BIM add-in software programs can help lighting designers create more efficient and accurate lighting designs. These programs can automate tasks such as generating lighting schedules and rendering photorealistic images.
  • Robust uses like real-time photorealistic visualization and virtual reality: BIM can create compelling real-time visualizations and virtual reality experiences. This can help lighting designers collaborate with clients and stakeholders to get feedback on their designs early in the process.
This presentation is for lighting designers interested in learning more about how BIM can improve their workflow and the quality of their designs.
