Plumbing Visibility in the MEPPP - ATG Webinar

If you do MEP design in Revit be sure to check out this great webinar presented by Don Rasmusson at ATG. Don highlights some of the great features we have integrated into the MEP Productivity Pack (MEPPP).

The video highlights how filters and System Classification/Types can be used to facilitate design and visualization of pipe within Revit. Taking a side step, for a moment, Don talks about the filters I setup in the 'working views' to indicate when an electrical device is not circuited (red), circuited but on assigned to a panel (magenta) and is circuited and assigned to a panel (green). Real-time design validation!

My Fuzor Avatar, For Real!

I have written about Cad Technology Center's (CTC) large object scanner before, and their store called ME3D in the Mall of America. CTC has also worked with, and promoted Fuzor, a product we use at LHB. Here are a few of the webinars CTC has hosted: Click here for YouTube list.

Out of these two connections and the fact that I would be speaking on Virtual Reality at NVIDIA's GTC 2018 I was able to get a special scan of myself at CTC which was sent to Fuzor and turned in to a custom Avatar, just for fun!


If you notice in the image above and video below, I am even wearing my Revit Express Tools shirt... which is yet another connection, as CTC sells the Electrical Productivity Pack I helped create at LHB!

Recap of Midwest University 2018

Another conference has come and gone already this year... Midwest University 2018 hosted by Cad Technology Center (CTC) - aka CTC Express Tools.

The conference had over 500 attendees and covered a wide range of topics, from Autodesk Revit to Civil 3D. This was a two day conference, but I was only able to attend  on the second day. So I missed the world's #1 AI robot Sofia unfortunately.

The location was at a brand new convention facility, Mystic Lake Convention Center,  just outside of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area in Minnesota. Although it made for a long day, I live close enough to have driven there and back in the same day.

Given the reasonable conference cost and relatively close proximity to the #6 ranked airport in the USA (according to this article anyway) Minneapolis / St. Paul International Airport, it makes this a great option to share, learn and network on AEC design technology with a strong emphasis on Autodesk products, add-ins and more.

Midwest University 2018

The world of Revit and CAD conferences is pretty small, so it is nice we have a formidable one right in our backyard here in Minnesota; Midwest University hosted by CTC. This conference always has high quality speakers and the great Lynn Allen, formerly with Autodesk, who will be back again this year.

In addition to Lynn, the world's #1 AI robot, Sofia, will be there. That should be interesting.

SKM Power Tools to Revit

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, there are no tools to connect SKM Power Tools to Revit that I am aware of. Thus, we have to do things, what little can be done, manually.

At LHB, we also use SKM for the single line diagram, arc flash evaluation, and short circuit calculations.  There is no possible way that Revit can accomplish what SKM does for these functions.  We import/link the SKM DXF file of the single line diagram into Revit.

There is duplication of OCP devices that are indicated in (Revit)...

Low Voltage Distribution in Revit

A post about the opportunities and limitations for electrical connectors in low voltage devices (families) using Revit for MEP design.

Low voltage circuits connect similar electrical components to form an electrical system. Once created, you can edit circuits to add or remove components, connect a circuit to a panel, add wiring runs, and view circuit and panel properties. Many missing elements in Revit 2017 model

I have seen this problem a few times recently; too many elements missing. I will share the most recent situation and a related Autodesk Knowledge Network (AKN) post.

A Revit 2017 architectural model started acting up. Various error messages and crashes were occurring for multiple designers. When we would try to run Audit, we would get the error "too many elements missing". Because of this error, we could not upgrade the model to 2018 either.

Here is what I wrote there:

Revit, in some cases, cannot properly calculate voltage drop due to how it automatically assigns wire size. Here is a brief description on this issue from the user guide of the Electrical Productivity Pack from Cad Technology Center that I helped to create. 

  • The method that Revit uses to assign wire sizes is to first select the rating (OPD) for the circuit, then Revit hard links the wire size to the rating of the circuit. This is unworkable, because it does not allow for adjustments for wire sizes independent from the OPD rating. It is not possible to increase wire size for voltage drop without changing the OPD rating, nor is it possible to increase the OPD rating for motor starting without also increasing the wire size.
  • Revit is backwards, the wire size should be selected based on the load first. Then the OPD should be selected for correct ampacity. NEC (National Electric Code in USA) may allow next standard OPD size to be used without increasing the wire size. However, this is not always permitted; i.e. a 53 A load may use conductors rated at 55 A and OPD at 60 A; but a 58 A load would require the next larger size conductor and perhaps the same 60 A OPD. Revit does not allow this flexibility.

I am glad we can edit circuit path in 2018, this is a big step in solving the issue of voltage drop and wire size. I talk about this in my 'What's New in Revit 2018" article for AECbytes.

In addition to what I had posted above... wire sizes are “hard coded” to the ampacity of the upstream OPD.  Revit calls this “Rating”.  Revit will automatically select the wire size defined in Manage > MEP Settings > Electrical Settings > Wire Sizes (see image below); ampacity equal to or the next size larger than the “Rating” (OPD) of the circuit.


Until this limitation is addressed, we are forced to totally ignore Revit's wire sizes and use a Key Schedule to manually document this in the electrical equipment schedule. It is not possible to partially use this information in schedules as we cannot override this information.

I previously touched on this limitation in my AECbytes article: What's New in Revit 2018.

I do not believe this is just a problem in the United States. But even if it is, we need to be able to control this to create code compliant electrical designs... like how stairs have two fundamental ways in which Revit can calculate the tread and riser height; 1) Max. riser & Min. Tread and 2) Stair Calculator dialog (I have never used the latter method).
