Last week, I attended the AIA Austin 2024 Building Enclosure Council (BEC) symposium... in today's post, I will share highlights from the daylong event that include presentations from Lake|Flato, SOM, MASS Design, JE Dunn, and more.
Random share (with related photo in post): I drove on the road with the highest speed limit in America to attend this event.
The day was kicked off by AIA Austin 2024 president (and former colleague) Sophia Razzaque, AIA, IIDA, NOMA, LEED AP.
The event was held at the University of Texas JJ Pickle Research Center in Austin, Texas.
The event had a good turnout!
Here is a really quick recap of the sessions...
The three Rs: Reuse, Renovation and Recladding
Clayton Korte and Trevor Brown with JE Dunn Construction
Trevor and Clayton shared two really interesting local projects they worked on... Cosmic Coffee in Austin is a really cool adaptive reuse project.
Bioclimatic Skins for Future Environments
Luke Leung, Director of Sustainable Engineering at SOM
Such a thoughtful and well-delivered presentation... I highly recommend you seek out one of Luke's presentations. He is an expert on embodied carbon in HVAC, which is still mainly a new frontier, I think.
Seeking Abundance
Chris Hardy, Design Director for MASS in Rwanda
Fantastic work by MASS in Rwanda... interesting work spinning up a construction company, creating manuals about embodied carbon and how to repeat the process for future projects.
Lunch with product vendors...
The Future of Building Enclosures
Joe Lstiburek, Principal of the Building Science Corporation
What a great slide...
Comparing fin-tube radiation to architecture:)
Building Enclosures in Revit – Unlocking Analysis Opportunities
Dan Stine, AIA, Director of Design Technology at Lake Flato
My session covered Revit, Systems Analysis (OpenStudio in Revit), Autodesk Next Gen Insight (Total Carbon - Energy Plus and EC3 data in the cloud), and the FenestraPro add-in for Autodesk Forma.

A quick plug for my YouTube series on Forma... this image highlights the C.Scale embodied carbon engine added to Forma. See the playlist here.
Looking Upwards and Onward – Building Enclosures for Tall Timber Buildings
Graham Finch, Principal and Senior Building Science Specialist at RDH
A presentation highlighting their work on mass timber and the super interesting seismic testing done, which must not only maintain structural integrity but also remain weather-tight.
Q&A Panel combined with happy hour
Moderated by Kristof Irwin from Positive Energy
The committee and speakers dinner the evening before was a lot of fun!
Selfie with Kristof...
Thanks
Thanks to the committee and Keith Simon, FAIA for inviting me and all the hard work to make this event happen.

Fun fact: On the way home, back to San Antonio (about 1.5 hours away), I drove on the road with the highest speed limit in America! For BIM Chapters updates, connect on LinkedIn
