UTSA Technology in Practice (TAP) Panel Discussion - Last Week

Last week, I had the opportunity to sit on a panel at the University of Texas - San Antonio (UTSA) with another practitioner from Overland Partners and two UTSA professors and talk about Technology in Practice (TAP) with architecture students. It was fun to share some of what we are doing at Lake|Flato and answer questions from the students.

The presentation started at 5 pm on Wednesday, 10/30, and had a great turnout. There was an enjoyable Q&A session with lots of questions... with answers from the panelists that did not always agree with each other, which is excellent as it shows that there is no perfect solution to the topic:)

Thanks to Garet Ammerman, a new Assistant Professor at UTSA, for inviting me and organizing the event (and for the great photos!).

Here is a quick overview of each panelist and their general topic:

Anne talked about the software used, and workflows to manage models, including clash detection and color coding for coordination.

İlayda shared the software, graphic representations, and photography she teaches her interior design students at UTSA.

Esteban sharing a fascinating presentation on how he is working with the City of San Antonio (their famous Historic Preservation Dept. leading the circular economy movement in the USA:)) and using machine learning to predict demolition permits, allowing the city to potentially offer interventions. It was interesting to learn how the "don't judge a book by its cover" mentality applied, as the analysis has tax and cultural metrics to consider.

Similar to Anne, I shared some of the software we use and their benefits. The image below highlights how we have used Autodesk Forma to study traffic noise.
