This week UpCodes announced their implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within their building code tool... which is an excellent application of AI within the AEC industry.
As an UpCode customer, I had early access to this tool while in beta. In today's post, I will share some of my experience... which, overall, was excellent.
Within UpCodes we can now use AI to ask naturally worded questions and receive detailed responses with specific code section links. I will share examples in this post.
Back in 2019, UpCodes was experimenting with AI to check toilet room code compliance within Revit. I wrote about this here: UpCodes for Revit - Real-time Code Checking with AI.

The image above lists several examples of suggested questions to ask... below is the answer to one (click to enlarge):
One thing I tried was to ask if a vertical grab bar is required in an accessible toilet room for both Minnesota and Texas.
Note that when you select a state or municipality, it defaults to the current code year and is amended, so it only looks at relevant code.
Texas state code question (not required):
Minnesota state code question (required):
Click one of the code references below the answer shows the relevant code. Clicking the "expand" icon to the right jumps you to that code section to review it in more context.
Within UpCodes, you can also see the graphics related to this section.
It will be interesting to see how this tool, and AI in this context, mature over time.
