BIM 360 Design Local Files and More

Revit creates a lot of files in your Windows User folder on your local drive. It is helpful to be aware of this, especially if you are having troubles with free disk space or accessing a BIM 360 Design project. I tend to keep these folders clean due to the number of Revit versions/projects I support, and yet mine are still pretty large, in terms of total space used.

Backups and Journal files:

They are all here:
  • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk
  • This location has 18 GB of data on  my computer
  • Multiple users on the same computer, they each have one

Update: Here is a Revit Idea I created to be able to move the Desktop Connector cached local files, i.e. change the path from the C drive to something like D drive: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-ideas/revit-desktop-connector-change-local-path-for-cached-files/idc-p/8798177

  1. Good insight Dan, I currently have 13GB... I imagine deleting the folders would cause a complete re-download of our model and linked models when you open the project the next time, how often do you delete the CollaborationCache folder?

  2. You are correct, all files need to be re-downloaded. But the old ones you are no longer working on are gone. I do this about once a month, or when my small 256 GB SSHD gets too low:)

  4. “Long path tool” is very helpful for this problem. You can solve this problem like copy, delete, long path files by using this tool.
