Autodesk University 2025 - This Week!

Autodesk University 2025 is quickly approaching, taking place later this month in Nashville, Tennessee. As both an adjunct professor and the Director of Design Technology at Lake|Flato Architects, I’m honored to be presenting two sessions that highlight emerging technologies and workflows with Autodesk tools.

The first session, led by Erica Bocian from Esri, explores the new ArcGIS extension for Autodesk Forma—an exciting advancement in connecting geospatial intelligence with early-stage design. The second session focuses on Autodesk’s end-to-end workflow with Revit and Insight (Total Carbon), a timely solution for those transitioning from the recently retired version of Insight.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with both of these tools since their beta phases, and I’m eager to share how these now publicly available workflows can be applied immediately in practice. Whether you’re a professional in architecture, engineering, or construction—or a student or professor looking to expand your toolkit—you’ll walk away with actionable strategies to bring back to your projects after AU 2025.

Here are the two sessions I am presenting and co-presenting in:

Beyond Energy Modeling: Next Generation Insight and the Future of Total Carbon in Revit (3164)

  • Wednesday, Sep 171:30 PM - 2:30 PM CDT
With the retirement of Autodesk Insight software, the new Autodesk Next Generation Insight software brings unprecedented clarity to operational and embodied carbon in a single cloud-based platform—at no additional cost to Revit subscribers. This session will explore how this new toolset changes the way we model and analyze building performance. You’ll learn how to create an accurate energy analysis model (EAM), define HVAC systems, and manage carbon benchmarks across both embodied and operational carbon dimensions. The talk will highlight critical workflow updates, new metrics, and best practices that allow designers and engineers to make data-informed sustainability decisions earlier and more confidently in their project timeline. Next Generation Insight represents not just an upgrade, but a whole new way of thinking about carbon in the BIM workflow.

From Data to Informed Design: Unlocking GIS-Powered Urban Design with Autodesk Forma Plus Esri (2896)

Wednesday, Sep 17 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM CDT

The future of sustainable, equitable urban design hinges on access to actionable data at the earliest design stages. This session will explore the ongoing strategic alliance between Autodesk and Esri, with an exclusive look at the new Autodesk Forma extension for ArcGIS that integrates deep geographic information system (GIS) insights directly into design workflows. You’ll hear from Lake Flato Architects’ Urban Planning Studio, the Forma team, and Esri’s Professional Services about how the Forma real-time simulation and massing tools, combined with robust GIS layers—from flood risk and green infrastructure to demographic and zoning data—can empower planning decisions that balance ecology, equity, and economy. Through real-world examples and a forward-looking road map, we’ll show how GIS-driven design accelerates collaboration and unlocks transformational outcomes for communities.
