A'22 Conference on Architecture + Lake|Flato Involved Sessions

In six months, the national American Institute of Architects (AIA) convention will descend upon Chicago for their first in-person gather since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Today's post will share the conference details and the four sessions Lake|Flato will be participating in.

This conference is a favorite annual event for many architects. It offers presentations, tours, social gathers, and an exhibit hall. Thus, the opportunity to earn continuing education (CE) units, network, and learn about new products all packed into three days is a big draw for many in the design and construction industry.
"Every year the AIA Conference on Architecture travels to an iconic city to explore what’s new and now in architecture and design. In 2022, the conference returns to Chicago—one of the most design-forward, sustainable cities in the U.S." quoted from the AIA website
At this conference eight people from Lake|Flato will be participating in four sessions!

Details

Dates:
Jun 23 – 25, 2022 (Thursday — Saturday)

Location:
McCormick Place
Chicago, Illinois

I've presented at this venue before, it is a great facility in the heart for downtown Chicago. The photo above is one I took at Lightfair in 2018. Here is a post on that if interested: Recap - Lightfair International 2018 in Chicago.

Here are the four session we will be involved in at the upcoming AIA convention:

ILFI Just Label: Transforming Your Company with Transparency

60-minute presentation
Saturday, June 25, 2022
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM
Description:
Transparency can be uncomfortable – especially when transparency leads to identifying weaknesses.  However, when architecture firms embrace transparency, the process can offer critical insight regarding focus areas for growth leading to improved equity, diversity and inclusion.  This session will give attendees an intimate window into the process of pursuing and leveraging the JUST Label toward practice improvement.

Building Design Cultures for Climate Action: Technology, Workflows, and Teams

90-minute moderated panel
Wednesday, June 22, 2022
12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
  • Panelist:  Daniel Stine – Director of Design Technology, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Panelist:  Misha Semenov – Senior Architect & Sustainability Coordinator, Centerbrook Architects & Planners
  • Panelist:  Jack Rusk – Sustainability Research Associate, EHDD Architecture
  • Moderator:  Mark Herter – Associate Principal, Centerbrook Architects & Planners
Description:
How can climate action be integrated into design culture across every project? In this panel, sustainable design professionals from three leading firms will have a lively discussion, sharing, through case studies, iterative actions taken in each phase to reduce carbon emissions and enhance environmental and human well-being. Structured as a conversation that follows the arc of the design process rather than a set of distinct presentations, the discussion will illuminate workflows for integrated sustainable design.

Lessons from Post-Occupancy Energy Evaluation (TH203)

90-minute moderated panel
Thursday, June 23, 2022
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
  • Panelist: Sam Rusek - Project Designer, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Panelist: Sunnie Diaz - Project Director, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Panelist: Gus Starkey - Project Designer, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Moderator: Kate Sector - Design Performance Coordinator, Lake|Flato Architects
Description:
Buildings operational energy makes up about 40% of the U.S.’s total energy usage and CO2 emissions. Post-occupancy energy monitoring and data collection are necessary for evaluating measurable energy performance, improving our designs, and creating future measurable goals to reduce our energy use and subsequent environmental impacts.  Lake|Flato started its energy monitoring program in 2014. Since then, we have monitored 16 commercial and residential projects of a variety of scales.  Lake|Flato has committed to sharing its progress through the 2030 commitment, which has the goal of achieving across the board net-zero operational energy portfolio by the year 2030. Through this process, we have learned a lot about our buildings, and building owners have saved thousands of dollars in energy costs.  In this session, we will introduce our energy monitoring process and major lessons learned regarding various energy categories such as HVAC, lighting, plug loads, and more. The session will follow with a panel of three case studies led by designers who will share their individual experiences and lessons learned for a deeper dive into the post-occupancy evaluation process.

Integrating Research into Architectural Practice

Virtual session
Thursday, July 28, 2022
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
  • Speaker: Kate Sector - Design Performance Coordinator, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Speaker: Sam Rusek - Project Designer, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Speaker: Ashley Grzywa - Project Designer, Lake|Flato Architects
  • Speaker: Anne Herndon - Project Director & Investigations Coordinator, Lake|Flato Architects
Description:
By leveraging existing research, investigating new ideas, conducting post-occupancy evaluation, and sharing lessons learned we can improve the design and performance of the built environment. This course will offer tools for developing research strategies appropriate for your firm and workflow. Panelists will introduce a variety of research and partnership models by presenting examples that include post-occupancy evaluation or energy performance, literature reviews of existing urban greenway research, and building technology prototyping, among others. The session will discuss both process and application of findings to future projects, highlighting the importance of using research to inform professional practice.

Finally, the image below (click to enlarge) is one of the five we were allowed to summit for the session I am participating in. It highlights the various post occupancy evaluation (POE) tools and workflows employed by each firm. Most impressive is Centerbook's greenPEAS device, developed in-house! This slide also includes a photo of Kate Sector, who is not presenting in this session, but is in two other sessions listed above:)

We hope to see you there!
