2019-20 ACEC/MN Engineering Excellence Awards

An LHB project I initiated back in 2011 recently won an ACEC of Minnesota Honor Award. The project, which is a bit unusual for this type of an award, is the MEP Productivity Pack for Autodesk Revit. We submitted for the award with our fellow ACEC-firm-member and technical partner Gausman and Moore (G&M).

This past Friday evening (2020-01-24) a few folks from both teams attended the 53rd Annual ACEC/MN Engineering Excellence Awards event in Minneapolis, MN. I am pictured below with my "partner in crime" Blake Guither from G&M.

Last year, LHB won a Grand Award and the Peoples Choice Award for the The Promenade of Wayzata, located in Wayzata, MN.

The MEP Productivity Pack started as an in-house effort to create an electrical design workflow that went beyond just using Revit MEP as a drafting tool. At one point, realizing we had developed something pretty special I went to my supervisor, the COO of the firm at the time, and suggested we sell this pack... he said "sure." We then reached out to our Autodesk Reseller, who was already developing Revit add-ins and doing demos, sales and trade shows... CTC Software. A couple years ago we joined forces with the MEP firm Gausman & Moore who develops the Mechanical and Plumbing portions of the pack. We still meet weekly to coordinate enhancements and new features to be added to the BIM 360 project, that serves at the template and sample project for the pack.

This is a great example, I think, of two competing firms coming together to make a product that is intended to help the industry be more efficient and successful! Recently we have been working with manufacturers to work with our standard and even developing a metric version of the pack. This is the basis of our award submission.

Below is the board we created for the event... click to enlarge.

Here are a few photos of the reception just before the awards ceremony started... each project receiving an award had a representative board on display.

LHB and G&M shared a table during the awards ceremony... here are a few photos.

Our project is announced and we head up to the stage to receive the award!
