AIA 2030 By The Numbers - 2019 Report

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) just released their annual AIA 2030 Commitment report... today's post highlights the report and the Lake | Flato feature on how a firm can get started on the commitment.

First, if you are not familiar with this initiative, read about it here: The 2030 Commitment - Are you up for the challenge?
"The mission of the AIA 2030 Commitment is to support the 2030 Challenge and transform the practice of architecture in a way that is holistic, firm-wide, project based, and data-driven. By prioritizing energy performance, participating firms can more easily work toward carbon neutral buildings, developments and major renovations by 2030."

AIA uses two easy-to-calculate metrics to gauge progress:
  • Predicted energy use intensity (pEUI) for whole building projects; and
  • Predicted lighting power density (pLPD) for interior only projects.

A few highlights from the report:
  • 311 companies reported data
  • 27 firms met the pEUI reduction target
  • 33% of interior-only projects met the pLPD target
  • 61% of whole-building GSF has been energy modeled
Lake | Flato was featured in the report, as shown in the image below (click to enlarge). On a related note, I also wrote this post about the 13 AIA COTE awards we have won to-date: AIA COTE Awards & Lake|Flato Winning Projects

Also, Lake | Flato's Heather Gayle Holdridge, Assoc. AIA is on the 2030 Commitment working group.

"Energy modeling is essential."
The report continues to show, year after year, that when energy modeling is done the pEUI results are improved. The example this year compares an office with, and with out, energy modeling with a reduction of 54% and 42% respectively.

This is why I continue to promote energy modeling, for example:
