Pratt Futures Presentation on Land, Energy, and Building Cycles

I had the opportunity to present to students at Pratt Institute last night, via Zoom. The presentation segment, called Land, Energy, and Building Cycles, had two other speakers from BlocPower and Cornell (Circular Construction Lab).

The presentation was streamed live on YouTube. The recording is now ready to view.

Student Led Series

The presentation was hosted by a student led group (Pratt SoA), who reached out to Lake|Flato and invited us to speak. I only had about 20 minutes, but managed to cover our sustainability/building performance organization within the firm, operational and embodied carbon mitigation goals/strategies, and post occupancy evaluation (POE).

To get things started, Pratt student Jared Rice gave a few words and introduced the speakers.

Since there is a recording, I will just share a few slides to set the stage...

Here is my opening slide... and one from a site visit to troubleshoot POE sensors at Confluence Park.

Dom Lempereur, BlocPower

Dom Lempereur Chief of Engineering at BlocPower, presented on the work his company is doing to massively reduce energy consumption for historic/existing buildings in NYC. Very interesting topics ranging from heat pumps to advanced software used to graphically visualize energy consumption and embodied carbon savings potential.

Felix Heisel, Cornell

The final presentation was by Felix Heisel, Assistant Professor, Director Circular Construction Lab, at Cornell University. He presented on several interesting projects his team has worked on. Including harvesting steel out of a power plant just days before it was demolished, and then discussed the detailed steps required to verify the quality of steel to meet building code requirements/inspections.

I love the aesthetic of the structure developed in the second image below... which was completely created using recycled elements.
