Advancing Computational Building Design 2020

Today's post shares some information about a conference chock-full of top caliber speakers in our industry; Advancing Computational Building Design 2020.

I had the chance to talk to two friends who presented at this conference last year, Carl Storms and Michael Kilkelly, who both said it was informative and thought provoking. It sounds like a smaller, more intimate, conference where one can learn about practical applications of computational design and get the opportunity to have meaningful, in-depth, conversations with attendees and speakers.

Computational design is something we should all be keeping on our radar, even if not currently using it, given its trajectory we are seeing in architecture... and other fields.

The rest of this post is information directly from ACBD:

Given the construction industry’s growing demand for design optimization and quicker feedback on each iteration, computation is an inevitable disruptive force in building architecture and engineering. However, challenges around ease of use, perception, workflow integration and speed of execution remain barriers to mass adoption.

Advancing Computational Building Design 2020 is returning in June for its fourth year to explore the best practices in integrating computation into the firm and the design process, sharing tools across the industry and proving its commercial value to gain buy-in.
Attendees will walk away with practical strategies and solutions for establishing and advancing computational design on their projects and in their firms.

Speakers include:
  1. Andrew Victory, Global Digital Transformation Lead – Arcadis
  2. Badri Hiriyur, Vice President | Director of CORE.AI – Thornton Tomasetti
  3. Petr Mitev, Global Leader of Design Computation – NBBJ
  4. Hiram Rodriguez, Design Technologist Specialist – Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture
  5. Michael Warren, Director of Digital Practice & Technology – AECOM
  6. Nicholas Cameron, Director Digital Practice, Associate Principal – Perkins&Wills
  7. Hilda Espinal, Chief Technology Officer | Senior Vice President – CannonDesign
  8. Elliot Glassman, Senior Associate + Technical Principal, National Leader of Computational Designer for Building Systems – WSP
  9. Jamie McIntyre, Canada Digital Lead – Mott MacDonald
  10. Evan Troxel, Director of Digital Practice – HMC Architects

Highlights for 2020 include:
  • An opportunity to sign up to the Computational Building Design Hackathon: Greener Building and Sustainability.
  • Presentations on current challenges by industry leaders on topics including; how they have developed the Organizational Structure of Computation in their firms, finding value for AI & ML, utilizing data to inform design, smaller project computation.
  • Thorough coverage into the issue of gaining buy-in from multiple stakeholders with 5 industry leaders presenting on their own victories.
  • Recent case studies on how computation has been used to improve the quality of design, increase firm efficiency and save costs.
